Do's and Don'ts of Bike Touring
(Or, Things we learned during "Biker Boot Camp" this week.)

DO check the MN -WI map before leaving on your cross-country tour so you know how to get to your destination the first night!

DO find out where the nearest grocery store is BEFORE you get to the campground so you don't have to backtrack to the town you just passed through and add ten extra miles to your trip.

DON'T enter an area marked "Trail closed" in hopes that the construction workers will let you pass through the 1/2 block that's torn up, or you may get stuck in six inches of mud with your brand new sandals.

DON'T expect that a town called "the bicycling capital of America" will have any paved trails for you to ride.

DO be sure you're just outside of a town that has a hospital right on your route if you're going to fall and need three stitches in your knee.

DO expect the unexpected!

DON'T stop by the side of the road to relieve yourself unless you're prepared for a hundred hungry mosquitoes to take advantage of the opportunity.

DO take lots if pictures of the quaint towns and beautiful landscapes that you pass.

DO thank God for every moment of clear blue skies and fresh spring greens as you feel the wind on your face.

DO thank God that the only rainy day of your trip so far is your rest day with friends.

DON'T look up at the steep hill (or difficult trial) looming ahead. Just pedal steadily and trust that you'll reach the top with God's strength.
